You Should Recognize Them by Face as Well as by Back

It takes 8 s for an average Russian citizen to authenticate a banknote he received.

These are the results of the study conducted approx a year ago by the experts of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation. The overwhelming majority does not pay attention to the authentication of low denomination banknotes at all and in case of high denomination banknotes (the 500 and 1000 Rouble) the public prefers authentication features the study of which does not require technical aids.

In other words of all the security features the public considers visual ones to be the most important, therefore it was the improvement of the visual security features of the Russian currency that was very much focused on in upgrading the existing series of notes.

As a result, the number of easily recognized organoleptic authentication features that do not require the use of additional equipment has increased on the upgraded notes. However, it"s not just the good security features that the banknotes require. It is necessary for the public to recognize the new authentication features and use them for the best not only in theory but also in practice. Today the Watermark publishes the detailed information of the upgraded Russian notes authentication features.

Be Able to Recognize the Upgraded Notes

Look for:

- on the front of the note: latent moire pattern image (it is located in the pattern stripe to the left of the main image on all the notes with the exception of the 10 Rouble; on the 10 Rouble it is surrounding the image of the chapel);

- on the front of 100, 500 and 1000 Rouble notes: read the numeral corresponding to the banknote denomination which is applied with laser MicroPerf;

- on the reverse of all the notes: five silver areas of the windowed metallized security thread are visible in reflected light (it appears as a continuous dark line in transmitted light).

10 Rouble Note

The design of the upgraded 10 Rouble note virtually does not differ from its predecessor - the 10 Rouble note of 1997.

The upgraded note is printed on the toned paper that features straw-coloured shade. The paper stock contains chaotic light-green and red security fibers as well as stepwise fibers with alternating red and blue areas. It will be useful to remind of the images on the note: on the front of the note: the view of the bridge across the Yenissei and the chapel in Krasnoyarsk (a relic of the 19th century); on the reverse: the view of the dam of Krasnoyarsk hydroelectric power station.

One of the differences is the appearance of a 2 mm wide windowed metallized security thread on the note. This thread appears on the surface with five visible areas on the reverse.

Another difference is the appearance of latent moire pattern image on the front of the note surrounding the image of the chapel. This pattern appears as a continuous monotone stripe when observed at right viewing angle and as alternating color stripes when observed at acute viewing angle from the long side of the note.

The Layout of Organoleptic Security Elements of the Upgraded 10 Rouble Note

1. Multitone local watermark of the banknote denomination.

2. Multitone local watermark: the image of the chapel.

3. The patch for the blind.

4. Latent effect. Letters PP (Российский Рубль - Russian Rouble) are visible in the middle of the guilloche pattern tape when observed at acute viewing angle.

5. The serial number is printed with red ink on the left coupon.

6. The serial number is printed with dark green ink on the right coupon.

The presence of the following security elements differs the new banknote from the prior one:

7. A 2 mm wide metallized security thread with five areas visible on the surface, which are called windows and located on the reverse of the note.

8. Latent moire pattern image. Alternating color stripes are observed surrounding the chapel at acute viewing angle from the long side of the note.

Special security fibers "ЗОНА" ("Area") with variable profile of cross-section (this feature is present on the notes of all denominations):

Paper sample with watermark and the windowed security thread. When the note is held up against the light the thread is visible as an opaque strip (this feature is present on the notes of all denominations):

50 Rouble Note

The upgraded 50 Rouble note is produced on the toned paper that features shade of light-blue. The paper stock contains chaotic light-green and red security fibers as well as stepwise fibers with alternating red and blue areas.

On the front of the note there is a sculpture at the foot of the Rostral Column, on the reverse - the total view of the building of the Stock Exchange and the Rostral Column on the Neva embankment (St. Petersburg).

As regards the fundamental differences of the upgraded notes, first, it is moire pattern image. It is located on the front in the pattern stripe to the left of the image of the sculpture. A continuous monotone stripe appears when observed at right viewing angle and alternating color stripes when observed at acute viewing angle.

The second fundamental difference is the appearance of the windowed metallized security thread. It appears as a continuous dark line in transmitted light and five silver areas are visible in reflected light on the reverse of the note.

100 Rouble Note

The upgraded 100 Rouble note is produced on the toned paper that features shade of light-pink. The paper stock contains chaotic light-green and red security fibers as well as stepwise fibers with alternating red and blue areas.

We"d like to remind you that on the front of the note there is a quadriga on the portico of the building of the State Academic Bolshoi Theatre (Moscow), on the reverse - the total view of the building of the Bolshoi Theatre.

For the first time laser perforation appears on the series of the upgraded notes beginning with this denomination. This method is used to apply the numeral corresponding to the banknote denomination, which is visible when the note is held up against the light. And the direct image of the numeral "100" is read when observed from the front of the note while the mirror image of the numeral "100" is read when observed from the reverse.

Latent moire pattern image (MVC-effect) is located on the front of the 100 Rouble note to the left of the image of the quadriga.

There is a windowed metallized security thread. It appears as a continuous dark line in transmitted light and five silvery areas are visible in reflected light on the reverse of the note.

And the direct image of the numeral "500" is read when observed from the front of the note while the mirror image of the numeral "500" is read when observed from the reverse.

It is worth mentioning latent moire pattern image to the left of the image of the monument to Peter the Great ("mechanism of action" is the same as on the notes of other denomination).

Plus the presence of the windowed metallized security thread.

One of the features of the upgraded note is the use of optically variable ink for printing coat of arms of the city of Yaroslavl (this ink was used to print the emblem of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation on the previous series of notes). The colour of coat of arms of Yaroslavl changes from crimson to green while tilting.

Laser MicroPerf is used to apply the numeral corresponding to the banknote denomination, which is visible when the note is held up against the light. And the direct image of the numeral "1000" is read when observed from the front of the note while the mirror image of the numeral "1000" is read when observed from the reverse.
