Moire increased clearness

This protective feature is easy to check but difficult to copy

MVC, that is hidden moire pattern, is one of new security features, appeared on modified Russian banknotes (by the way-of all denominations).

To learn more about this protective feature "Watermark" addressed its creators- specialists of the Association Goznak.

— How is the effect MVC achieved?

— Colourful lines are placed on a banknote with offset or orlov printing, after that colourless stamping by intaglio method is done. Mutual location of these two pictures and exactest extending give an effect of colourful stripes while looking at the corner. MVC picture depends on the way the lining and the stamping combine with each other.

On banknotes the variant MVC with straight alternating colourful stripes was used, but the stripes might be very different, with complex configuration of moire effect and colour transitions. Very many experiments over complicating MVC effect were carried out by Perm printing factory of Goznak.

— Is it possible to counterfeit this protective feature?

— MVC is oriented to protection of the banknotes from counterfeits on the copying machines. For reflecting this feature it is necessary to use either intaglio printing or stamping, till congreve.

While scanning you can get monotone plate, but its colour will not work as MVC effect works, e.g. change while moving the sight corner.

On the copying machine the lining doesn"t happen to be good, but as for moire- it doesn"t work either, because it demands not colour reflecting but relief stamping.

The moire effect protects a banknote from counterfeiting on an amateur level safely. But if an experienced counterfeiter starts working over it, he, in principle, can reach certain similarity.

In general, this feature, from counterfeiting point of view, is difficult, because it is necessary to use any stamping. Now we are working over complicating the system of stamping to the maximum, it means to make the life of counterfeiters problematic as much as possible.

From point of view of Goznak experts, MVC effect is better protection than anticopying net. Moreover the copying machines of the last generation reproduce graphic wonderfully and it is practically impossible to struggle with counterfeiters with the help of graphic elements. Moreover, almost all copying machines of last series are connected to computers, that gives opportunity of graphic editing.

The research, being carried out by us, showed that with spreading multiplying technology the struggle with counterfeiters must be run to the direction of the features, which are not reproduced on the copying machines, these are MVC, applicating holograms, latent effect and others.

— Is MVC a new protective feature? Or it was used before on another security product?

— The feature MVC was worked out about a year and a half ago and has been already used for protection of not big circulation of securities. MVC effect proved to be a safe and well-working protective feature, so we offered our customer, the Bank of Russia, to use it for banknote protection.

In so doing the Central Bank from various variants MVC chose a variant without introducing additional elements into the field MVC. It allowed to use all the area of the element for good reading the feature to the maximum.

— Who is the author of MVC effect?

— The Association Goznak has got a patent for MVC effect. The modern technologies of creating new ideas of protective features are those that the developer is the whole team of specialists.

— Are there foreign analogues of MVC effect?

— Nowadays abroad there are similar technologies but the protective effect is got there not because of moire, but image relief. As an analogue we can submit well-known latent (hidden) effect, used on all banknotes with intaglio. It is also protects a banknote from counterfeiting well, because it requires stamping existing. There are interesting ideas of stamping on a film.

In general, changing the picture while looking at the corner is not a news in the world practice of money production. But the work of Goznak, that is changing the colour while looking at the corner, is used first time in the world.

— How does the usage of the feature influence the price of the final product?

— The application of MVC doesn"t make the product more expensive at all, if offset, Orlov or intaglio method of printing is used.

Execution of MVC doesn"t demand additional equipment, except an intaglio machine, which has been already used in Goznak.

For MVC effect to look bright, it is necessary to use inks, completely opposite in colour scale,- for example, red, blue and yellow. It is necessary to take into consideration while creating the colour solution of the design of the product for protection. Now three colours are used on the banknotes, allowing to get three-color moire with smooth transition between them. Nowadays the specialists of Goznak can receive any needed shade of MVC field with the help of just three colours.

— Are there plans to develop further and to master MVC effect?

— Moire pattern on the modified banknotes is not limit of our technological abilities. The nearest future while using MVC it will be possible to see more complicated ornaments.

It is real concerning the unique equipment of Goznak and its staff experience. The moire pattern, received by combining the lining and the stamping, depends on the character of the elements and the corner between them. So the question of exactness of technological operations themselves is of a great importance. While introducing the effect printers had some problems: it was necessary to learn to supply not only registration in the offset, but good registration of intaglio printing towards offset one. Any small displacement of the lines while printing causes remarkable changes in colours of the field MVC. But at Goznak people always work according to the steady rule: "All the money is absolutely equal". So any changes in colours from one banknote to another one is unacceptable. These technological difficulties are also a barrier for counterfeiters.

In general, the protective level of Russian banknotes are so high today that to imitate all unity of the features is impossible. So, due to experts opinions, after the modification passed good counterfeits will not appear at all, but cheep copies will be possible to differentiate from the original.
