INTERPOL HAS RECEIVED E-PASSPORTS

The Ukrainian Consortium УEDAPSФ was entrusted with their issue

In October 2009 in Singapore the General Assembly of INTERPOL by common consent confirmed Consortium УEDAPSФ as the manufacturer of e-passports for its employees. Since that moment the
Consortium has officially proceeded to implement the e-passport and ID card of the INTERPOL employee.

Beforehand, the employees of INTERPOL did not have special passports. The first electronic biometric passports were given to Khoo Boon Hui, President of INTERPOL, Ronald K. Noble, General Secretary of INTERPOL and the members of the Executional Committee of INTERPOL right at the Assembly.

Their personal data were transferred to Kiev, and in a few hours the passports were ready. Since then, registration of personal data of the 187 heads of national bureaus of INTERPOL was started. They will also receive new epassports in the nearest future.

According to Ronald K. Noble, the new e-passport will become a determinant for the introduction of new standards in the document security field: УThe introduction of the new INTERPOL e-passport is a considerable step forward not only in terms of support of officers of law enforcement authorities in performing their duty, but in setting international standards for security travel documents.

Especially taking into account the fact that the usage of ineffective and counterfeited passports by terrorists represents the major threat for safety of citizens of the whole worldФ.

The representatives of the Consortium confirmed that the INTERPOL e-passport has no equals in the world Ч it is the best secured and high-tech ID document.

The e-passport developed by УEDAPSФ for INTERPOL for the first time, contains a number of security elements, including the polycarbonate data page, laser engraving, laser perforation, holographic, micrographic and optical security elements, watermarks and a chip with the recorded personal data of the passport holder.

The Watermark Magazine asked Galina Gagen, a member of the Board of Directors of Consortium УEDAPSФ to comment the event.

Ч Why was Consortium УEDAPSФ chosen to develop and produce the first in history e-passport of INTERPOL?

Ч Passport and other ID documents production is one of the major profiles of the Consortium.
We developed the travel passport of the citizen of Ukraine, the driving license, the vehicle registration certificate as well as the vehicle inspection certificate with a chip in it. Among our international projects, one may name the passport of the crew member (for aviation). Besides, Consortium УEDAPSФ is the developer of the unique diamond and jewelry identification system, the manufacturer of De Beer passport. The document corresponds to all international passport standards in spite of the fact that it is issued not for a person but for a piece of jewelry. With its help it is possible to identify not only the piece of jewelry, but also every diamond in it. Numbers are engraved on every diamond and
repeated in the passport. Such documents help to suppress illegal transportation of goods
and occurrence of counterfeited products.

Ч Was there a tender held to choose the manufacturer of the INTERPOL passports?

Ч Yes. Many well-known companies specializing in high-security document development took part in it, but the working of Consortium УEDAPSФ was chosen the best.

Ч You said that the new passport is cuttingedge. What security features are used in it?

Ч The passport has 29 levels of security. Some of them are implemented at the passport form production stage, others are applied during the data personalization stage. Per example, laser engraving and the image laser perforation are used when the passport is manufactured. One of the most important parts is the electronic chip with all the information about the passport holder, including his biometric data. A demetallized hologram is embedded into the passport pages. It is a unique product practically impossible to counterfeit.

Ч Were all the passport components produced in Consortium УEDAPSФ?

Ч All, except for the electronic chip. Due to the fact that Consortium УEDAPSФ is an association of a group of Ukrainian companies, and each of them is the leader in its field, it is possible to develop and produce all the passport components. УEDAPSФ possesses all most up-to-date and completely certified capacities.

Ч How much time does it take to produce the new biometric passport?

Ч Less than 24 hours. We receive the holderТs data through secure communication channels, and on the same day the product is ready for shipment to any country of the world. The first passports given to the leaders of INTERPOL were manufactured and personalized in 2 hours, and after that it took them 14 hours to be delivered to Singapore.

Ч How important is the project for УEDAPSФ?

Ч It is very important for us politically. It is a great honor to produce documents for such a well-known organization as INTERPOL. Besides, it is a demonstration of the capacities of the Consortium in terms of technologies and scientific research. The fact that we were chosen the best proves that we may work at the same level with the world leaders in the security production field.
